Spring Calving Season — Part Two

May 6, 2009 //  by PVMaster

The second half of our spring calving season is now complete.  Since March 28th, we have had four heifers and a set of twin bulls.  The heifers are sired by 3C Macho, In Dew Time, Momentum, and Trademark.  The twins are out of a first calf heifer, and are sired by MF Prime Rib.  The twins were a definite surprise to us!  The heifer–we call her Sally–was calving when I came home from work, so I stayed with her until she had her calf and started cleaning him.  Since all was well with her, I went to bed.  A couple hours later I went to the barn and to my surprise, there was a second calf!  Sally gave birth to both calves, cleaned them, and had them up nursing all on her own.

Our calf totals for the spring calving season are ten heifers and seven bulls, with birthweights ranging from 60 lbs. to 99 lbs., with the average being 81 lbs.

2009 Spring Calving Season — Part One

March 1, 2009 //  by PVMaster

winter_calf

The first part of our spring calving season has been sucessfully completed.  As of February 25, 2009, we have eleven calves (six heifers, five bulls).  Our next group starts on March 20, 2009.  The sires of the heifers are Star Power, Dream On, Shear Force, Momentum, and Lucky Man; the sires of the bulls are Dream On, Trademark, Powerline, and Momentum.  The birth weights range from 65 lbs. to 99 lbs., with the average weight being 82 lbs.  All calves were born unassisted, with the exception of a Momentum bull calf out of a first calf heifer–we gave her just a little help to get started, then she did the rest.  Four of these calves were born out of first calf heifers, all of them got their calves up and nursing very quickly.  Sucessful calving seasons are one of the many reasons to choose Simmental cattle.
